Charles Asiedu, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Tano South Constituency, has urged immediate action to revitalize the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company, stating that it is essential to Ghana’s economic growth and transition to sustainable energy.

Speaking on the Ghanaian Parliament floor, Mr. Asiedu emphasized that the state-owned business is crucial in encouraging the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas by manufacturing and distributing reasonably priced, safe cylinders and associated accessories for both domestic and international use.

The MP claims that increasing access to LPG is still a crucial part of Ghana’s plan to reduce climate change, enhance energy efficiency, and safeguard the environment.

Promoting LPG use is a crucial part of Ghana’s plan to mitigate climate change, protect the environment, and employ sustainable energy. By lowering indoor air pollution and the high prevalence of respiratory illnesses linked to traditional fuels, the use of LPG technology has greatly improved Ghanaians’ quality of life.

According to Mr. Asiedu, Ghana’s LPG usage has grown significantly over time, from 100,000 metric tonnes in 2009 to over 400,000 metric tonnes in 2016. The advent of the cylinder recirculation concept, which has made LPG safer and more available for households, is partially responsible for the growth, he said.

He continued by saying that the country’s LPG penetration increased from over 25% in 2016 to over 50% in 2020 because to government programs like the National LPG Promotion Policy.

The Tano South lawmaker emphasized the industry’s contribution to employment outside of household consumption, pointing out that the LPG sector presently supports more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs nationwide.

He did, however, issue a warning, stating that in order to guarantee the security and long-term viability of LPG distribution in Ghana, the industry’s explosive expansion has also revealed regulatory and infrastructure shortcomings.

Despite these obstacles, Mr. Asiedu was upbeat about the industry’s future, citing government initiatives to promote LPG as a greener substitute for biomass fuels like charcoal and firewood.

“Ghana’s LPG business appears to have a bright future. Growth in the industry will continue to be fueled by the government’s dedication to increasing access to clean energy and pushing LPG as a substitute for conventional biomass fuels, he said.

The MP suggested a thorough recovery plan that involves cash infusion to aid in the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company’s rebirth, technological upgrades and strategic partnerships.

He pleaded that the state provide targeted funding to modernize the company’s manufacturing lines, implement cutting-edge fabrication technology, and enhance quality control procedures.

In order to increase the company’s market reach, Mr. Asiedu also advocated for cooperative ventures with private investors and LPG marketing firms. He also urged government organizations to give the company top priority when purchasing LPG cylinders and accessories.

He also recommended taking use of opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area to export cylinders built in Ghana to nearby countries where there is a growing need for clean cooking options.

In order to maintain demand for locally produced cylinders, the Tano South MP emphasized the necessity of ongoing public education regarding the health, economic, and environmental advantages of using LPG.

Stronger demands will encourage the company’s operations and advance Ghana’s clean energy strategy, he said.

Mr. Asiedu came to the conclusion that reviving the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company is a component of Ghana’s larger shift to cleaner energy and extends beyond saving a faltering state firm.

Reviving the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company involves more than just saving a struggling business. It is about lowering our carbon footprint, enhancing Ghana’s shift to sustainable energy, and raising the standard of living for our people,” he said.
