On March 9, 2026, the Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company (GCMC) welcomed an AD-HOC Advisory committee established by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition. This initiative aims to bolster the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) currently managed by the National Petroleum Authority. As part of their stakeholder engagement efforts, the committee sought to review the processes, challenges, and opportunities related to the CRM, engaging with key players in the industry, including GCMC.
During the visit, Mr. Abdul-Rahman Mankir, the Managing Director of GCMC, addressed the committee, highlighting the company’s unwavering commitment to the CRM since its pilot phase in 2020 and its official launch in 2024. This dedication underlines GCMC’s role in promoting safe and efficient LPG cylinder usage across Ghana.
Key discussions during the engagement focused on the variation in cylinder types currently in circulation and the lack of a standardized approach. Dr. Riverson Oppong, CEO of COMAC, raised significant concerns about the need for a unified standard for cylinders and valves in Ghana. He emphasized that the National Standards Authority must take the initiative to establish and enforce these standards, ensuring that the industry does not solely dictate the specifications.
Another vital topic was the efficient tracking of cylinders supplied to consumers. GCMC representatives shared their plans to enhance tracking measures through the implementation of QR codes, which will facilitate better monitoring of cylinders in circulation. This technological advancement aims to improve accountability and safety within the LPG cylinder supply chain.
Sustainability was also a prominent agenda item. Dr. Patrick Ofori highlighted the critical need for the recall of old cylinders and the introduction of new, standardized models. This initiative aims to ensure safety for consumers and align all cylinders with the same quality and safety standards, thus enhancing the overall sustainability of the CRM.
The Director of PPME at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Mr Elliot Lamptey commended the GCMC team for their hard work and encouraged them to scale up production to meet the CRM’s increasing demands. The support from the Ministry signifies a collaborative effort toward achieving an efficient and effective gas cylinder management system in Ghana.
The visit from the committee not only reinforced the importance of stakeholder engagement in the CRM’s success but also demonstrated GCMC’s commitment to working collaboratively with regulatory bodies and industry partners to ensure a safer, more sustainable lpg cylinder supply system for all Ghanaians.
As GCMC continues to innovate and lead in the cylinder manufacturing sector, the company remains dedicated to providing quality products and services that meet the highest safety standards, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future in Ghana’s energy landscape.
